01Platform or AI builder: decide first
"Ecommerce website" covers everything from a single product with a Buy button to ten thousand SKUs with warehouse sync. The right tool depends on which end you are at, and choosing well saves weeks.
| Your store | Best fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 20 products, design matters | AI website builder + hosted checkout | Fast, distinctive, no platform fees beyond payments |
| Digital products or bookings | AI website builder + payment links | No shipping or inventory to manage |
| Hundreds of products, variants, stock | Commerce platform (Shopify, WooCommerce) | Inventory, tax and shipping rules built in |
| Existing store that looks dated | Keep the platform, redesign with AI | Keep orders and SEO, change the look |
02Step by step with an AI builder
For a small, design-led store, this is the fastest route from idea to first order.
- 1Write the briefName the products, the buyer and the feeling: "handmade ceramic mugs, earthy and tactile, for people who buy one good thing instead of five cheap ones." The AI website prompts guide has store prompts to start from.
- 2Generate the storeAsk for a home page, a product grid and a page per product. Check the first screen on a phone before anything else.
- 3Add real productsReplace sample items with your photos, names, prices and descriptions. Specific details (size, material, care) answer questions before they become returns.
- 4Connect checkoutCreate a payment link or checkout per product in Stripe or a similar provider, and point each Buy button at it. Payments, receipts and card security are handled for you.
- 5Add the trust pagesShipping, returns, contact and privacy pages. Buyers look for them before paying.
- 6Test an order end to endBuy your own product with a real card, then refund it. Check the email, the receipt and the phone experience.
03Product pages that sell
Most purchase decisions happen on the product page, and the first screen of it carries the most weight: Nielsen Norman Group found 57% of viewing time goes to the part of a page visible before scrolling (NN/g). Put the answer to "what is it, what does it cost, when will I get it" there.
- Large, real photos from several angles, including one in use.
- Price, delivery estimate and returns policy next to the Buy button.
- A short description of what makes it different, then specifics: size, material, care.
- Real reviews only, with the reviewer's permission.
- One primary button. "Add to cart" and "Buy now" fighting each other slows people down.
04Checkout: where most sales are lost
Baymard Institute's running analysis puts the average documented cart abandonment rate at about 70%, and the most common reasons are extra costs shown late, being forced to create an account, and slow or complicated checkout (Baymard).
The fixes are simple and mostly about honesty: show shipping costs early, allow guest checkout, keep the form short and offer the payment methods your buyers use. A hosted checkout from a payment provider already does most of this well.
05Get found: ecommerce SEO basics
Give each product its own page with a unique title, description and image alt text written for people. Google can show price, availability and ratings in results when product pages include product structured data (Google Search Central); ask your builder to add it.
Write product descriptions yourself, or edit AI drafts until they say something only you could say. Google's guidance on helpful content rewards pages made for people, not pages made to rank (Google Search Central).
06What not to let AI write
AI drafts placeholder reviews, ratings and "bestseller" badges. Remove every one. In the US, the FTC's 2024 rule bans fake reviews and testimonials, including AI-generated ones, with civil penalties for violations (FTC). Prices, stock levels, delivery times and sizing must also come from you.
Orlume designs the storefront: product grid, product pages and brand, as a real Next.js site you can connect to a hosted checkout. Deployment is one click: press Publish in the workspace, pick a name, and the site is live at name.orlume.site with no hosting to set up.
