What is whitespace?

Whitespace is the empty space between and around elements on a page.

Definition

Also called negative space, it does not have to be white: it is any area without content. Margins, padding, line spacing and the gaps between sections are all whitespace.

Why it matters

Space creates hierarchy and calm. What has room around it reads as important, and generous spacing is one of the clearest signals of a premium design.

How to get it right

  • Use a consistent spacing scale.
  • Give section headings more space above than below.
  • Let the most important element breathe.
  • Increase space before cutting content.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Filling every gap
  • Random, inconsistent spacing
  • Text running edge to edge on mobile
