02What designers do
A web designer starts from goals and users: who visits, what they need and what the business wants them to do. They organize content, sketch wireframes, design pages in Figma or directly in a builder, choose type and color, and test whether people can find things. Visual hierarchy and information architecture are core skills.
03What developers do
Developers turn designs into working sites and apps. Front-end developers build what visitors see with HTML, CSS and JavaScript frameworks; back-end developers handle servers, databases and integrations; full-stack developers do both. They care about performance, accessibility in code, security and keeping the site maintainable as it grows. What is Next.js? gives a sense of the modern tooling.
04Where they overlap
The boundary is blurry. Designers who know CSS design better layouts, and developers with an eye for design build better interfaces. The Bureau of Labor Statistics groups both in one occupational outlook and notes that developers often have both programming and graphic design knowledge. Builders like Webflow and AI tools blur it further, letting designers publish without writing code and developers generate layouts without a designer.
05How to choose
- Choose design if you enjoy layout, type, color, understanding people and explaining decisions.
- Choose development if you enjoy logic, debugging and making systems work.
- Try both for a month: design a page in Figma, then build it in HTML and CSS.
- Consider a hybrid if you want to freelance or join small startups.
06Learning either
Both can be learned largely for free. How to learn web design and best free web design courses cover design; MDN and The Odin Project cover development. Do web designers need to code? explains how much code a designer should know, and UI/UX design vs web design covers another nearby path.
07Freelancing in each
Freelance web designers usually sell sites to small businesses, startups and marketing teams, often building them in Webflow, Framer, WordPress or AI builders rather than handing off to a developer. Freelance developers sell custom functionality, integrations, performance work and maintenance, often subcontracting for agencies.
Many successful freelancers combine both: they design the site, build it with a modern tool, and charge a monthly retainer for updates and improvements. That hybrid offer is easier to sell to small clients, who want one person responsible for the whole result. How much to charge for a website covers pricing either way.
What people who tried it say
Hacker News developers often lament how complex web development has become, while designers and developers debate whether one person should do both or work as a pair.

Commenters blame resume-driven development and a loss of simple architecture, a reminder that much development effort goes into tooling rather than design.

Our take
pick the side you enjoy, then learn enough of the other to collaborate well. The most valuable people on small teams can move between both.
Where this falls short
Job titles are inconsistent: some "web designer" jobs are mostly development and vice versa. BLS pay figures are US medians and group several specialties.
Orlume does both halves for a first version: a design pass decides layout and type, then agents write real Next.js code you can keep editing. The free plan includes 10 message credits.
