01What Google says is required
Google's AI features documentation is short and clear. To be shown as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet. There are no additional technical requirements, and Google says you do not need to create new machine-readable files, AI text files or special markup.
The controls are the existing ones. nosnippet, data-nosnippet and max-snippet limit what Google may show, including in AI features, and noindex removes the page entirely. If you have set any of these to protect content, they also reduce your AI Overview visibility.
02How AI Overviews choose sources
Google describes AI Overviews as using a technique that issues multiple related searches across subtopics to find supporting pages. That means a page can be cited for a question it does not rank first for, if it answers part of the question well. It also means pages that cover a topic in depth, with distinct sections for each subtopic, have more chances to be pulled in.
- Pages that rank for the query or closely related ones.
- Sections that answer a subtopic directly under a matching heading.
- Specific facts: numbers, steps, prices, dates and named sources.
- Content Google trusts on the topic, judged partly through links and reputation.
03How to write pages that get cited
Write for the question, then for the follow-up questions. Put a two-to-four sentence answer under the first heading, then expand. Use headings phrased like the searches people make, tables for comparisons and numbered steps for processes. Cite primary sources and add your own experience, which is what makes a page worth quoting instead of a summary of other summaries.
- 1Find the questionsUse Search Console queries, the People also ask box and autocomplete to see how people phrase them.
- 2Answer firstA direct answer in the opening paragraph, no throat-clearing.
- 3Cover subtopicsOne section per related question: costs, steps, alternatives, mistakes.
- 4Be specificReplace "affordable" with a price range and "fast" with a time.
- 5Mark it upUse clear HTML headings, lists and tables, plus schema markup where it fits.
- 6Keep it currentUpdate facts and dates; stale numbers get replaced by fresher sources.
04What AI Overviews do to clicks
Pew Research Center tracked the browsing of 900 US adults in March 2025 and found that users who saw an AI summary clicked a traditional search result in 8% of visits, compared with 15% when no summary appeared, and clicked a link inside the summary in about 1% of visits. Fewer people click overall, so the clicks that remain concentrate on the cited sources and on searches where people want to go deeper, such as comparing options or buying.
That shifts the goal. For simple factual questions, being cited builds brand awareness more than traffic. For commercial searches, a clear page that wins the citation and then gives a reason to click, such as a tool, price list or example, still earns visits.
05How to track it
Google includes AI Overview and AI Mode appearances in Search Console's Performance report as part of web search data; it does not break them out separately. Watch for pages whose impressions rise while clicks stay flat, which often means a summary is answering the question. Third-party rank trackers can show which searches trigger AI Overviews and whether you are cited.
The same work also helps with ChatGPT and Claude, which retrieve pages from their own indexes; should I block AI crawlers? covers their settings, and does llms.txt work? explains why a special file is not needed.
What people who tried it say
Hacker News discussions of AI Overviews focus on the drop in clicks to websites and on accuracy problems, with publishers worried about traffic and users sharing ways to hide the summaries.

Our take
there is no AI Overviews trick. Write the clearest, most specific answer on the web for questions your customers ask, make sure Google can index it, and give people a reason to click through.
Where this falls short
Google does not publish how sources are selected, and AI Overviews change frequently. Click data from Pew covers one month of US browsing in 2025; behavior may differ by topic and over time.
Orlume pages publish with clear headings, real text and structured content Google can index and quote. The free plan includes 10 message credits.
