01What Google says
Google's page experience documentation states that Core Web Vitals are used by its ranking systems, that other page experience aspects do not directly help a site rank higher, and that Google Search always seeks to show the most relevant content even if the page experience is sub-par. It adds that a great page experience can contribute to success when there are many helpful pages available, and that chasing a perfect score just for SEO may not be the best use of your time.
Read together, that means speed will not lift a weak page over a strong one, but between two equally good answers the faster page has an edge.
02The Core Web Vitals thresholds
web.dev, Google's developer site, defines the Core Web Vitals and their "good" thresholds, measured at the 75th percentile of real page loads on mobile and desktop.
| Metric | Measures | Good |
|---|---|---|
| Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) | How fast the main content appears | 2.5 seconds or less |
| Interaction to Next Paint (INP) | How quickly the page responds to taps and clicks | 200 milliseconds or less |
| Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) | How much content jumps while loading | 0.1 or less |
03Lab scores vs real-user data
PageSpeed Insights shows two things: lab data from a simulated load (the 0 to 100 score) and field data from real Chrome users, when your site has enough traffic. Google's ranking uses field data. A lab score of 70 with passing field data is fine; a lab score of 100 on your fast laptop says little about visitors on mid-range phones.
Search Console's Core Web Vitals report groups your pages by status using the same field data, which is the most useful place to see whether you have a real problem.
04What usually makes pages slow
Most slow sites share the same handful of causes, and fixing them rarely requires a rebuild.
- Oversized hero images and videos: compress, resize and use modern formats like WebP or AVIF.
- Too many web fonts: limit families and weights, and preload only the main one.
- Third-party scripts: chat widgets, trackers and embeds often cost more than your own code.
- Images without dimensions: reserve space so content does not jump (CLS).
- Heavy JavaScript on the first screen: render text on the server and load interactive extras later.
- Slow hosting with no CDN: static or server-rendered pages served from a CDN are fastest.
05Speed matters more for visitors than for rankings
Even where the ranking effect is small, the business effect is not. A page that takes several seconds to show anything loses visitors who were ready to buy, and paid traffic you sent there is wasted. For landing pages and stores, speed is a conversion issue first and an SEO issue second.

What people who tried it say
Hacker News developers broadly welcome Google pushing sites to be lighter, while warning that chasing perfect scores can add complexity, and noting that even Google's own pages fail its tests.

Commenters support the push against bloated sites but warn that optimizing for scores can add complexity and bugs; several defend strict layout-shift rules.

Our take
pass Core Web Vitals on your important templates and stop there. After that, an hour spent improving content beats an hour shaving 100 milliseconds off a page that already loads well.
Where this falls short
Google does not publish how much Core Web Vitals weigh, and the effect varies by query and competition. Field data needs enough traffic to appear, so new sites must rely on lab tests at first.
Orlume publishes server-rendered pages with optimized images and fonts, built to pass Core Web Vitals on phones. The free plan includes 10 message credits.
