How to add a website to your home screen (iPhone and Android)

How to add a website to your home screen on iPhone (Safari) and Android (Chrome), how to open it as a web app, and what to do if the option is missing.

The short answer

On iPhone, open the site in Safari, tap Share, then Add to Home Screen, name it and tap Add; turn on Open as Web App to use it like an app. On Android, open the site in Chrome, tap the three-dot menu, then Add to Home screen or Install app. The icon appears only on the device where you add it.

  • iPhone: Safari, Share, Add to Home Screen, Add.
  • Android: Chrome menu, Add to Home screen or Install app.
  • "Open as Web App" on iPhone opens the site in its own window.
  • If the option is missing on iPhone, add it through Edit Actions in the Share sheet.

01On iPhone or iPad (Safari)

Apple's iPhone User Guide notes two details: if Add to Home Screen is not in the list, scroll to the bottom, tap Edit Actions and add it; and the icon appears only on the device where you add it, so do it again on an iPad.

  1. 1Open the website in SafariGo to the exact page you want the icon to open.
  2. 2Tap the Share buttonThe square with an arrow pointing up, in the toolbar.
  3. 3Tap Add to Home ScreenScroll down the list if you do not see it straight away.
  4. 4Choose how it opensLeave Open as Web App on to use the site like an app, in its own window.
  5. 5Name it and tap AddA short name fits under the icon better.

02On Android (Chrome)

Wording varies between Chrome versions and phone makers. A shortcut opens in the browser you used to create it; an installed web app opens in its own window. Samsung Internet, Firefox and Edge on Android have similar options in their menus.

  1. 1Open the website in ChromeNavigate to the page you want.
  2. 2Tap the three-dot menuTop right of the screen.
  3. 3Tap Add to Home screen or Install appSites built as web apps show Install; others create a shortcut.
  4. 4Confirm and place the iconTap Add, then drag it where you want or let the launcher place it.

03Shortcut or web app: what is the difference?

A plain shortcut is a bookmark with an icon: it opens the site in your browser. A web app, also called a progressive web app, opens in its own window without the address bar, can work partly offline and, on iPhone since iOS 16.4, can send notifications if the site supports them. WebKit's announcement for iOS 16.4 also allowed third-party browsers to add sites to the Home Screen.

04Troubleshooting

To remove an icon, press and hold it and choose Remove (iPhone) or drag it to Remove or Uninstall (Android).

  • No Add to Home Screen on iPhone: use Safari (or a browser that supports it), then check Edit Actions in the Share sheet.
  • The icon is a letter or screenshot: the site has not provided an app icon; it still works.
  • You are signed out in the web app: web apps can keep separate cookies from the browser, so sign in once inside the app.
  • The icon disappeared: on Android, check the app drawer; some launchers do not place shortcuts automatically.
  • In the EU in early 2024, Apple briefly planned to remove Home Screen web apps, then reversed the decision; they work as normal.

05If you run the website

Visitors will add your site to their home screens more often, and it will look better when they do, if the site has a web app manifest and proper icons. The favicon is the starting point; MDN's guide to progressive web apps covers the rest. How to make a website an app explains both sides.

What people who tried it say

When Apple planned to remove Home Screen web apps in the EU in 2024, Hacker News filled with users who depended on them, and developers elsewhere note that most people still do not know the option exists.

Our take

for sites you open daily (your bank's web app, a team tool, a recipe site), the home screen icon is a small change that saves real time. Turn on Open as Web App when it is offered.

Where this falls short

Menu names and options change between iOS, Android and browser versions. These steps match Apple's and Google's documentation as of October 2026.
