How to save a website as a PDF

How to save any web page as a PDF on Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android using Print to PDF, how to make it look clean, and tools for whole sites.

The short answer

Use your browser's print dialog. On a computer, press Ctrl+P (Windows) or Cmd+P (Mac), choose Save as PDF as the destination, adjust layout and margins, then Save. On iPhone, tap Share, then Print, pinch out on the preview and share or save the PDF. On Android, use Chrome's Share, then Print, and choose Save as PDF.

  • Print dialog, then Save as PDF: works in every major browser.
  • Turn off headers and footers and turn on background graphics if needed.
  • Reader mode first gives a cleaner PDF of articles.
  • One PDF per page; whole sites need other tools.

01On a computer (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari)

Google's Chrome help describes the print flow: open the File menu and choose Print (or press Ctrl+P or Cmd+P), pick a destination and adjust settings. In Safari on Mac there is also File, then Export as PDF, which keeps the page closer to how it looks on screen.

  1. 1Open the pageScroll to the bottom first so lazy-loaded images appear.
  2. 2Open PrintCtrl+P on Windows or Cmd+P on Mac, or File, then Print.
  3. 3Choose Save as PDFIn the Destination or PDF menu.
  4. 4Adjust settingsLayout, paper size, margins, headers and footers, background graphics.
  5. 5SavePick a name and folder.

02On iPhone and Android

On iPhone, open the page in Safari, tap Share, then Print, then pinch outward on the preview to open it as a PDF, and use Share to save it to Files. Safari's screenshot tool can also capture a Full Page and save it as a PDF. On Android, in Chrome tap the three-dot menu, then Share, then Print, and choose Save as PDF as the printer.

Firefox for Android added Save as PDF in 2022; Hacker News users welcomed it but noted the usual quirks: some elements render oddly, and the PDF uses a paper-like layout rather than the mobile view.

03Getting a clean PDF

Some sites provide a print stylesheet that formats pages for paper automatically. If you run a website, adding one is a small kindness: is your site responsive? is the screen version of the same idea.

  • Use Reader mode (Safari, Edge, Firefox) before printing articles to remove menus and ads.
  • Turn off headers and footers to remove the date and address from every page.
  • Turn on Background graphics if colors or images are missing.
  • Choose landscape for wide tables.
  • Use More settings, Scale to fit content that is cut off.

04Saving a whole website

For research or legal records, note the date and address on the PDF; printing with headers and footers on does this automatically.

05Saving pages you need to cite or keep

Pages change and disappear. If you need a record, such as terms you agreed to, a price you were quoted or an article you cite, save a PDF with headers and footers on, so the date and address print on every page, and consider saving the page to the Internet Archive too, which gives others a copy they can check.

For research, a PDF is easier to annotate and share than a link. Name files consistently (site, page title, date) so you can find them later.

06Turning a PDF back into a web page

People sometimes ask the reverse: how to make a PDF into a website. A PDF can be linked from a site as a download, but a real web page reads better on phones and can be found by search engines. Copy the text into your website builder or an AI builder and rebuild the layout for the screen; how to make a website mobile friendly explains why PDFs are hard to read on a phone.

What people who tried it say

Hacker News users found that saving pages as PDF on phones has improved but still distorts some layouts, which is why reader mode and screenshots remain useful alternatives.

Users welcomed the feature but noted the usual print-to-PDF quirks: some elements render oddly and the PDF uses a paper-like layout rather than the mobile view on screen.

Our take

for articles, switch to reader mode and then print to PDF. It removes the clutter and produces a file you will actually read later.

Where this falls short

Some pages block printing or render poorly in print. Copyright still applies to saved copies; keep them for personal use unless you have permission.
