01What Google itself says
Google avoids promising timeframes, but it gives two useful markers. Its guide to getting on Google says it can take a few weeks for Google to notice a new site or changes to an existing one. Its SEO starter guide says some changes take effect in a few hours while others take several months, and suggests waiting a few weeks before judging whether a change worked.
Anyone quoting an exact number of months is giving their own experience, not a rule. Results depend on the competition for your searches, the state of your site and how quickly you earn links.
02A realistic timeline for a new website
| Stage | When | What you see |
|---|---|---|
| Discovery | Days to a few weeks | Home page indexed, brand name searches work |
| Long, specific searches | First few months | Impressions in Search Console, a few clicks |
| Mid-competition searches | Several months onward | Steady traffic on pages with links and depth |
| Competitive head terms | Often a year or more | Only with strong content and authority |
03Why some sites move faster
Speed comes down to a few factors you can see in advance.
- Competition: "wedding cakes in Bend, Oregon" moves faster than "wedding cakes".
- Links: Google finds and trusts pages that other sites link to; a new domain starts with none.
- Content depth: a page that fully answers a question beats a thin one, whatever its age.
- Technical health: a fast, crawlable site with clean URLs gets processed sooner.
- Publishing pace: more useful pages give Google more chances to match searches.
04What to track while you wait
Rankings and traffic are lagging signals. In the first months, watch leading ones in Search Console: pages indexed, impressions, and the number of different searches you appear for. Rising impressions with few clicks means Google is testing your pages; better titles and descriptions help turn those into clicks, as do meta descriptions matter? explains.
Avoid changing everything every week. Each change needs time to be recrawled and reassessed, and constant rewrites make it impossible to know what worked.
05How to get results sooner
Start with searches you can realistically win: specific questions, local terms and comparisons in your niche. Make each page the best answer you can, link pages to each other, and earn links from real places such as partners, directories and communities. SEO for a new website is the checklist, and how to get backlinks for a new website covers the links.
If you need traffic this month, SEO is the wrong tool on its own. Ads, email, partnerships and communities work immediately; SEO compounds over time. Most businesses use both.
06Why results can drop after they arrive
Rankings are not permanent. Competitors publish better pages, Google rolls out core updates several times a year, and search results themselves change, for example when an AI Overview appears above the links. A page that ranked third can slip to eighth without anything on your site changing.
Treat your best pages as living documents. Update prices, dates and examples at least yearly, add sections that answer new questions people search, and check Search Console for pages whose clicks are falling. Refreshing an existing page that already has links and history is usually faster than starting a new one.
What people who tried it say
On Hacker News, founders describe SEO as a long-term channel to start early and not to rely on for the first users, which they get from outreach and communities instead.
- Ask HN: How are you acquiring your first hundred users?Hacker News
The founder lists SEO as a long-term channel rather than a source of the first users; replies stress going where the audience already is.
- I'm losing the SEO battle for my own open source projectHacker News
Commenters point out that a copycat site outranked the original because high-authority outlets linked to it, showing how much links shape rankings.

Our take
plan on months, not weeks, and start on launch day. The sites that win are the ones that publish useful pages steadily for a year, not the ones that optimize hard for a month and stop.
