02How Google ranks local businesses
Google's help page on improving your local ranking says local results are based mainly on three things: relevance (how well your profile matches the search), distance (how far you are from the searcher or the place they named) and prominence (how well known you are, drawing on links, articles, directories and reviews). Google also says you cannot pay for a better local ranking, and it keeps the details of its algorithm private, so be wary of anyone promising a guaranteed top spot on the map.
A website helps two of the three. Clear service pages make it easier for Google to match you to relevant searches, and a site other businesses and directories can link to adds to prominence.
03Setting up your profile well
- 1Claim and verify itThrough Google Business Profile, with your real address or service area.
- 2Choose accurate categoriesA precise primary category matters more than many vague ones.
- 3Complete every fieldHours, services, attributes, photos and a description that matches your website.
- 4Link your websiteIdeally to the page most relevant to searchers, often the homepage or booking page.
- 5Ask for reviewsFrom real customers, and reply to them; Google lists reviews as part of prominence.
- 6Post updates and photosFresh photos, offers and news keep the profile current and give searchers more to look at.
04What your website should add
Your website should go deeper than the profile can: a page per main service, prices or starting prices, your service area, how the process works, answers to common questions and real photos of your work. What pages does a small business website need? lists them.
05Reviews: where they help most
Reviews on your Google Business Profile feed directly into local prominence, according to Google's ranking guidance, and they are often the first thing searchers read. Ask every happy customer, make it easy with a direct review link, and reply to reviews, including critical ones, politely and specifically. On your website, quote your best reviews near the call to action and link to the profile so visitors can see they are real. Never write or buy reviews; Google's policies prohibit it and customers notice.
06Keep the details consistent
Your business name, address and phone number should match exactly across your profile, website and directories. Inconsistent details confuse customers and make it harder for search engines to be confident about who you are. Update hours in both places for holidays.
For a business still deciding whether a website is worth it, do small businesses still need a website? covers the trade-off, and how to get my website on Google covers getting the site itself indexed.
What people who tried it say
Hacker News commenters agree a Google Maps listing is essential for local businesses, with some saying a profile plus social media is enough for restaurants and others arguing that customers still expect a website with details.
- If I'm looking for a physical place I usually just look at Google MapsHacker News
Commenters describe using Maps listings to find places, while others note they check a business's website for menus, prices and details before going.

Where this falls short
Google does not publish how it weighs each factor, and local results vary by search and location. Service-area businesses and businesses in competitive cities face different challenges.
