Do I need hosting if I already have a domain?

A domain is an address; hosting is where the site lives. Why you need both, which hosting comes built into builders, and how to connect the two.

The short answer

Yes. A domain is only the address people type; hosting is the computer that stores your site and sends it to visitors. Without hosting, your domain shows a parking page or nothing. The good news: website builders include hosting, static sites can be hosted free, and you connect the domain to the host by changing a couple of DNS records at your registrar.

  • A domain is the address; hosting is where the site actually lives.
  • Website builders include hosting in their plans.
  • Static sites can be hosted for free on several platforms.
  • You connect them with DNS records, not by moving the domain.

01Domain vs hosting in plain terms

Think of a domain as your street address and hosting as the building. Owning the address does not give you somewhere to live, and a building without an address is hard to find. A website needs both: the domain points to the host, and the host serves the pages.

What each one does
DomainHosting
What it isYour address, e.g. example.comServers that store and serve your site
Bought fromA registrarA host or a website builder
Typical costAround $11 a year or more for .comFree to $30+ a month
Without the otherParking page or errorOnly a host's own address, e.g. name.netlify.app

02Where hosting comes from

Most people do not buy hosting separately anymore.

  • Website builders like Squarespace, Wix and Framer include hosting in the plan.
  • Static hosts such as Cloudflare, Netlify, Vercel and GitHub Pages host for free within limits.
  • WordPress needs a web host with PHP and a database, usually shared or managed hosting.
  • Some registrars bundle basic hosting, but separate specialists are usually better.

03How to connect your domain to hosting

You do not move the domain; you point it. The host tells you which DNS records to add, and you add them where your domain's DNS is managed.

  1. 1Add the domain at your hostIn the host or builder's domain settings.
  2. 2Copy the records it showsUsually an A record for the root domain and a CNAME for www.
  3. 3Add them at your registrarIn the DNS settings for the domain.
  4. 4Wait and verifyChanges can take from minutes to a few hours; the host then issues HTTPS.

04What about email?

Email is separate again. Addresses like [email protected] need an email provider such as Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Zoho or a registrar's email product. They use MX records on the same domain. When you connect hosting, change only the website records so you do not break email. What is DNS? explains the record types.

05Where to go next

If you have a domain and no site, how to host a website for free covers free hosts and how much does website hosting cost? covers paid ones. To connect a domain to a specific host, how to connect a custom domain to Vercel walks through it. How to get a website online explains the whole picture.

06Before the site is ready

A newly registered domain usually shows the registrar's parking page, often with ads. That is harmless, but a simple holding page with your name, what you do and a contact email looks far better if someone visits early. Some free hosts let you put one up in minutes, and it gives search engines something to find.

You can also set up email on the domain before any website exists, since email uses separate records. How to set up email with your own domain explains how.

Later, changing hosts never requires a new domain. You add the domain at the new host, update the records at your registrar and the address now points somewhere else. Visitors keep typing the same address and never notice the move.

What people who tried it say

Hacker News commenters regularly advise keeping domain registration separate from hosting, so a problem with one company, such as an account suspension, does not take everything down at once.

Our take

keep the domain at a good registrar and treat hosting as interchangeable. Then switching builders or hosts later is a DNS change, not a crisis.

Where this falls short

Some all-in-one products blur the line by selling domain, hosting and email together. The principles are the same, but menus and record names differ between providers.
