Marketing portfolio examples: how to show results

Marketing portfolio examples: how to turn campaigns into short case studies with goals, actions and results, what to include by role, and how to handle NDAs.

The short answer

A marketing portfolio is four to eight short case studies, each with the goal, what you did, and the result in numbers: sign-ups, revenue, traffic, cost per lead. Add the work itself (ads, emails, landing pages, content) as evidence. Because most marketing results are confidential, share percentages or ranges where clients allow it.

  • Lead with results; marketing is judged by outcomes.
  • Goal, action, result: three lines per case study.
  • Show the work itself as supporting evidence.
  • Use percentages or ranges when exact numbers are confidential.

01Why marketing portfolios are different

Designers are judged on how the work looks; marketers are judged on what it did. A beautiful ad with no result is a weak example; a plain email that lifted revenue is a strong one. Senior marketing roles are well paid (the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a median of $166,790 for marketing managers in May 2025), and candidates compete on evidence of impact.

02Example case study format

Keep each case study short enough to read in a minute. Put the result in the first or second line, then the detail for anyone who wants it.

03What to include by role

Marketing covers very different jobs, and each is judged by its own numbers. Show the work and the metric that matters for the role you want, not every metric you can find.

Marketing portfolio contents by specialism
RoleShowMeasure
Performance / paidAds, targeting, budget decisionsCost per acquisition, return on ad spend
Content / SEOArticles, content strategyOrganic traffic, rankings, sign-ups
Email / lifecycleSequences, segmentationOpen and click rates, revenue per email
SocialPosts, campaigns, communityReach, engagement, conversions
Brand / product marketingPositioning, launches, messagingAdoption, pipeline, win rates

04Confidential results and NDAs

Most marketing data belongs to the employer or client. Ask before sharing, and if you cannot, use relative figures ("doubled trial sign-ups"), anonymize the company ("a mid-size e-commerce brand") or show a personal project instead. Graphic designers on Stack Exchange describe the same problem and solve it with a contract clause that reserves the right to show work, sometimes after a delay.

Never invent or inflate numbers. Interviewers ask how you measured results, and a figure you cannot explain does more harm than none.

05Format

A simple website or a PDF of 8 to 12 pages both work. A website lets you link from LinkedIn and update it as you go; a PDF can be tailored to each application. The site itself is a small marketing test: a clear headline, proof up front and one call to action. What should a landing page include? applies directly, as does websites for marketing agencies.

06A structure for the whole portfolio

This is the same structure a good landing page uses, and that is the point: a marketer's portfolio is also a demonstration of marketing. Reviewers notice when the portfolio itself is clear, specific and persuasive.

  1. 1HeadlineWho you help and how: "I grow trial sign-ups for B2B software companies."
  2. 2Three results up frontOne line each, with the strongest number you can share.
  3. 3Case studiesFour to eight, each with goal, action and result, then the work.
  4. 4Skills and toolsBriefly: channels, analytics tools, budgets managed.
  5. 5ContactOne clear way to reach you.

07How to measure your own project

If you build a personal project to show, set the goal and a baseline before you start: followers, subscribers, visits or sales on day one. Change one thing at a time and write down what you did each week. At the end you have a real case study with real numbers, and an honest account of what did not work, which interviewers often find more interesting than the wins.

What people who tried it say

Freelancers and designers discussing portfolios on Stack Exchange describe confidentiality as the main limit on what they can show, and contract clauses or anonymized cases as the fix.

Our take

one case study with an honest, explained result beats ten campaign screenshots. Hiring managers are looking for how you think about results.

Where this falls short

The example case study is illustrative, not a real campaign. Pay figures are US medians from BLS for marketing managers, not entry-level roles.
